Eat with ComfortEnjoying a good meal with family and friends is one of life's most enjoyable experiences. Eating is a past time as well as a necessity. As social creatures we gather in groups to eat, drink, and share stories. For those individuals who have lost their natural teeth, a well made denture can make the difference between the ability to still enjoy these important life moments or a sad need to avoid them. Don't avoid enjoying your life with others. Make sure your teeth work as well as they can.
For most individuals, it is the lower denture that is tough to wear. Every dentist and denturist I know encourages people to keep any solid lower teeth they can, for as long as they can. Working with a dentist to place a lower partial denture is often an option discussed with patients. Full lower dentures can work, however for this to happen, they must fit very well. If a denture does not adapt evenly and accurately to the jaw bone in the lower part of your mouth, it can be a constantly painful experience. Keep your denture fitting, it is the best answer to maintain your ability to eat. People of any age are healthier if they are well-nourished. If you're over 65, you're one of the fastest growing parts of America's population. It is estimated that by the year 2000, people over 65 will make up 20% of our population. Soon, the baby boomers will start turning 62 and will be known as the most active group of retired individuals we have ever seen. Are you a baby boomer? Are you planning to enjoy your life fully and actively? Of course you are! Staying healthy is a key part of that plan. Having dentures does not need to interfere with your ability to enjoy life. Search for answers until you find one that works. It's worth it! People of any age are healthier if they are well-nourished. Well-nourished older people feel better, recover faster from illnesses, spend less time in the hospital, and can possibly live independently longer than older people who don't eat well. A person missing a few teeth, all of their teeth or even who wears dentures that fit well may experience difficulty talking and chewing, changes in taste, stomach and intestinal problems, and/or quality of life, each of which is preventable. Wearing dentures may result in declining health since the textures of foods often times need to be changed, forfeiting the nutritional value. Those who wear dentures may have only 1/6th the chewing ability in comparison to those who have their natural teeth. The human body is constantly changing, to avoid having your dentures contribute to these health problems, they need attention. It is recommended that a set of dentures be replaced at least every 10 years. The standard of care is actually becoming to replace them every 5-7 years! Are your dentures 10, 15 or even 25 years old? It's not always easy to eat well. As you age you may lose some of your ability to taste, smell, and see. You may have greater difficulty in preparing foods and some of you may just not enjoy cooking any more. Loosing natural teeth, makes it difficult to chew and dentures that don't fit can be discouraging. As you age, it becomes imperative to your overall health to keep your teeth good working order whether they are they are your natural teeth or dentures fabricated for you by a dental professional.
